BBL™ Photorejuvenation
BBL™ (BroadBand Light) is an advanced photorejuvenation technology that uses pulses of broad-spectrum light to target specific chromophores within the skin, primarily melanin and oxyhemoglobin. Through the use of interchangeable filters, the physician selects a precise wavelength range and directs energy toward pigment deposits, vascular lesions, or diffuse redness while minimizing exposure to surrounding tissues.
Developed by Sciton, BBL™ is among the most extensively studied light-based platforms in dermatology. Long-term clinical studies have demonstrated not only cosmetic improvements but also biological effects associated with regular treatment, including modulation of molecular markers linked to skin aging.
At the Art Clinic, BBL™ treatments are performed on the face, neck, décolleté, hands, and other areas affected by photodamage.
Indications
BBL™ may be recommended for:
- Pigmented lesions, including solar lentigines, sun-induced hyperpigmentation, and freckles
- Uneven skin tone and dull complexion
- Vascular conditions such as rosacea, telangiectasias, and diffuse facial redness
- Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea
- General signs of photoaging
- Reduced skin brightness and diminished skin quality
- Fine superficial vascular networks on the hands, neck, and décolleté
How the Procedure Is Performed
Before treatment, the skin is thoroughly cleansed. Both the patient and physician wear protective eyewear.
The physician selects the appropriate filter according to the treatment objective, whether targeting pigment or vascular abnormalities, and adjusts pulse parameters individually.
The treatment handpiece is placed against the skin, delivering brief pulses of light that last fractions of a second. An integrated contact-cooling system protects the epidermis and enhances comfort throughout the session.
Patients typically experience a mild snapping sensation accompanied by warmth. Topical anesthesia is generally unnecessary.
Treatment of the face usually takes between 20 and 40 minutes.
After the procedure, pigmented lesions often become temporarily darker. This is an expected response indicating that melanin-containing cells have absorbed energy. Over the following 7–14 days, these darkened spots gradually exfoliate and fade.
Mild redness may persist for several hours, but recovery time is minimal.
Results and Recovery
Improvement in Pigmentation
Pigmented lesions frequently become noticeably lighter or disappear completely within one to two weeks after the first treatment session, depending on their depth and nature.
Improvement in Vascular Changes and Skin Tone
Rosacea-related redness, telangiectasias, and diffuse flushing commonly improve after one to three sessions.
Patients often report a brighter complexion and a more even skin tone.
Collagen-Stimulating Effect
Subtle dermal remodeling and refinement of skin texture continue to develop during the first one to three months following treatment.
Number of Sessions
Correction of pigmentation generally requires one to three sessions.
For maintenance of overall skin quality and long-term anti-aging benefits, a course of three to four treatments per year may be recommended.
Treatment protocols are individualized by the physician.
Duration of Results
Pigment reduction may remain stable for years if strict daily photoprotection is maintained.
Recurrence of pigmentation can occur with significant ultraviolet exposure and inadequate sunscreen use.
Contraindications
BBL™ treatment is generally contraindicated in patients with:
- Recent tanning or significant sun exposure
- Darker Fitzpatrick skin types (V–VI), which require careful assessment because of a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active inflammatory skin diseases within the treatment area
- Use of photosensitizing medications, including oral retinoids and certain antibiotics
- Active malignancy
- Photosensitive disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus
- Vitiligo affecting the treatment zone
A complete evaluation of contraindications is performed during consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can BBL™ Be Performed During Summer?
Treatment during summer months is possible only with caution.
Recent tanning is considered a contraindication. In fair-skinned individuals without sun exposure, treatment may be performed provided that broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50+ is used consistently afterward.
For most patients, autumn and winter remain the preferred seasons for a treatment course.
How Long Does It Take for Darkened Spots to Disappear?
Pigmented lesions commonly darken immediately after treatment and then gradually flake away over a period of 7–14 days.
This reaction is expected and should not be interpreted as worsening pigmentation.
Is BBL™ Suitable for Dark Skin?
Patients with Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI have a greater risk of developing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
The physician will assess skin type individually and may recommend adjusted settings or an alternative treatment modality when appropriate.
How Many Sessions Are Needed for Rosacea and Facial Redness?
Most patients require one to three sessions performed at intervals of four to six weeks.
Vascular lesions often respond quickly, and improvement may already be visible after the first treatment.
Can BBL™ Be Used on the Hands and Décolleté?
Yes.
BBL™ effectively treats sunspots, uneven pigmentation, and vascular changes on the hands, neck, and décolleté, which frequently exhibit signs of photoaging earlier than the face.
