Permanent Makeup 'Tattoo'

A special pigment is injected into the superficial layers of the skin — not as deeply as in a traditional tattoo, but deep enough for the result to last for years. Brows, eyelids, and lips look polished from the moment you wake up, even without makeup.

Permanent makeup, or cosmetic tattooing, is the introduction of hypoallergenic pigment into the superficial layers of the skin using a specialized machine or manual tool. Unlike a traditional tattoo, the pigment is placed only in the upper layers of the dermis, much more superficially than in artistic tattoos.

This is why permanent makeup gradually fades and requires correction. It is not permanent forever, but long-lasting: from 1 to 5 years depending on the area, technique, skin type, and aftercare. The procedure helps save time on daily makeup, correct eyebrow asymmetry, restore lip contour definition, and create a lasting effect of well-defined eyes.

Permanent Makeup Areas

Eyebrows

Eyebrows are the most popular area. Modern techniques make it possible to create either a natural or more pronounced result, depending on the patient’s wishes. Different application techniques are used according to individual skin characteristics and the desired effect.

Permanent eyebrow makeup in Moscow helps correct asymmetry, fill in sparse areas, or create a shape from scratch when there is a lack of hair.

Eyelids

Eyelid permanent makeup includes eyeliner, lash line enhancement, and shading. Lash line enhancement creates the effect of thicker eyelashes and a more defined gaze.

Eyeliner can range from thin and delicate to clear and expressive. Lower eyelid tattooing is performed with special caution due to the proximity of the mucosa.

Lips

Lip permanent makeup includes contouring, full color with shading, and the watercolor technique, as well as shape correction.

Permanent lip makeup is relevant in cases of age-related loss of contour definition, asymmetry, or the desire for a lasting “made-up lips” effect. Anesthesia is mandatory because the lips are sensitive.

Permanent Eyebrow Makeup Techniques

Hair Stroke Technique, or Microblading

The hair stroke technique involves manual application of fine strokes that imitate natural hairs. It creates the most natural effect. It is recommended for normal and dry skin; on oily skin, the strokes may blur over time.

Powder Brows

Powder brows create a soft, powdered effect without sharp lines. The technique is suitable for all skin types, including oily skin. It lasts longer than the hair stroke technique.

Combined Technique

The combined technique uses hair strokes at the beginning of the brow and powder shading in the body and tail of the brow. It provides both volume and naturalness.

Watercolor, or Shaded, Brows

Watercolor brows create a soft gradient without sharp borders. This is a modern technique for achieving a subtle, fashionable effect.

Indications for Permanent Makeup

Desire to save time on daily makeup

Eyebrow asymmetry, uneven or weak hair growth

Hair loss in the eyebrow area after surgery, chemotherapy, or trichotillomania

Age-related loss of lip contour definition and thinning of the lips

Allergy to decorative cosmetics

Active lifestyle, sports, and swimming

Visual impairment or coordination difficulties that make daily makeup difficult

How the Procedure Is Performed

Consultation and Design

The specialist analyzes facial features, skin type, color type, and discusses the patient’s wishes. The eyebrow shape, eyeliner line, or lip contour is drawn with a pencil and approved by the patient. The procedure begins only after approval.

Anesthesia

An anesthetic cream is applied to the area for 30–40 minutes. For the lips and lower eyelids, anesthesia is especially important because discomfort can be significant without it. Additional anesthetic may be applied during the procedure if necessary.

Pigment Application

A specialized machine or manual tool introduces pigment into the upper layers of the dermis according to the approved design.

The duration is 1.5–2 hours for eyebrows, 1–1.5 hours for eyelids, and 1.5–2.5 hours for lips.

Immediately after the procedure, the result looks saturated and darker. This is normal. During healing, the pigment lightens by 20–40% compared with the initial tone.

Healing and Correction

During the first 3–7 days, crusts form on the treated areas. They must not be picked. The skin may flake and itch; this is a normal regeneration process.

During the healing period, which usually lasts 7–14 days, it is not recommended to wet the area intensely, visit a sauna or swimming pool, apply decorative cosmetics, or sunbathe.

After 10–14 days, once healing is complete, the pigment settles into its final color. Mandatory correction is performed after 4–6 weeks: the specialist evaluates pigment retention, fills in gaps, and, if necessary, adjusts the shape or tone. The result is considered complete only after correction.

Result and Duration

Permanent makeup is not a forever procedure. The pigment gradually fades under the influence of UV exposure, skin metabolic processes, and skincare products.

Approximate duration: eyebrows last 1.5–3 years, lips last 1–2 years, and eyelids last 3–5 years.

The duration is affected by skin type, with oily skin fading faster, intensity of sun exposure, use of acid peels and retinoids, and individual metabolism. Refreshing correction prolongs the result for a similar period.

Contraindications

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Decompensated diabetes mellitus

Blood clotting disorders or anticoagulant therapy

Tendency to form hypertrophic scars and keloids

Skin diseases in the treatment area, including psoriasis or eczema during exacerbation

Active herpes on the lips, for lip tattooing

Oncological diseases, requiring oncologist approval

Mental disorders and unrealistic expectations

The full list of contraindications is clarified by the specialist during the consultation.

Why Choose Iskusstvo Clinic

Aesthetic Approach with a Surgical Perspective

The clinic’s specialists understand facial anatomy and the principles of harmonious proportions. This allows them to create a result that fits the specific patient’s features naturally, rather than a standard template makeup look.

Correction of Previous Work

Patients come to the clinic with unwanted results from permanent makeup performed elsewhere: unsuccessful shape, blurred pigment, or pigment that is too dark. Doctors help correct or remove pigment with laser treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Eyebrow Tattooing Painful?

With anesthetic cream, the procedure is tolerable. Most patients describe the sensation as light scratching.

The lips and lower eyelids are more sensitive, so longer anesthesia or additional anesthetic during the procedure may be used.

Why Do Eyebrows Look Very Dark After the Procedure?

Immediately after pigment application, the color looks saturated and darker than the final result. During healing, the skin lightens, the pigment settles deeper, and the result becomes softer by 20–40%.

The final color is assessed 3–4 weeks after the procedure.

How Long Does Permanent Makeup Last?

Eyebrows last on average 1.5–3 years. Lips last 1–2 years. Eyeliner and lash line enhancement last 3–5 years.

The fading rate depends on skin type, lifestyle, including sun exposure, peels, and retinoids, and individual metabolism.

Can Permanent Makeup Be Done If There Is Old Tattooing?

Yes, but a consultation is required first. The specialist evaluates the shade and depth of the old pigment.

In some cases, new work can be applied over the old pigment. In other cases, preliminary laser removal is required. Attempting to cover unsuccessful permanent makeup without proper assessment often worsens the situation.
